The Balloon Party

This was the birthday party that almost wasn't planned
My husband was turning sixty and not many party decorations were on hand
We decided on a date only a month before
No invitations had even been bought at the store
Texting, messaging and email would have to do
Although we couldn't invite many people we still asked quite a few
Everyone was asked to bring a birthday balloon to the party
It made the house look festive, and gave the guests a laugh that was hardy
We provided sandwiches, and fried chicken, and a homemade cake
Soda and ice cream was there for all to partake
Others brought drinks and side dishes, homemade and from the store
When everything was setup there was food gallore
We have a small house only 950 square feet
Getting in and out of the kitchen was quite a feat
No one seemed to mind the crowded spaces
They all seemed quite happy, it showed on their faces
All that's left now of that party are eight helium balloons
I corralled them altogether but I will move them out soon
They don't seem to be running out of air or dying
It was a good idea that has left me shaking  my head and sighing
Christmas decorations they are not
So into another room they will be got
So they will live to fly another few days
Until enough is is enough and I throw them away
