A pet by one definition is any domesticated or tamed animal kept for pleasure rather than utility. Therefore a good pet would be an animal that has found its way into your heart and become one of the family. And so it would follow that one good pet deserves another, shouldn't it? Try telling that to a six year old female cat that had the run of the house for five years and then one day, after an extensive search, another one year old female cat was introduced. The original cat (Chelsea), has long since past, but it appears the second cat (Milly), is here for the long haul. This poem tells their saga.
One Good Pet Deserves Another?
She came with the name Jill but I liked the name Chelsea
She was named after the president's daughter
She was our first daughter and much prettier and softer
Her eating, grooming and toileting habits took some getting used to
The litter box needed to be cleaned before she did it herself
What she would bat out of the litter was not good for our health
We bought a fishtank and set it up on her counter
We tried to keep a goldfish but she kept knocking off the lid
She would stare and stare and put her paws in like a nosey kid
We then adopted a son who was four going on five
She didn't like children and from him she would run
He decided after repeated failed attempts that she wasn't much fun
And then we moved to a new house and after a year or two
We got our son a cat of his own
She was a year old but still not fully grown
The new cat was loved by one and all, almost
If growling hissing and spitting were signs of love
Then Chelsea's love was shown far and above
Milly soon learned who was the top cat in charge
Although she smacked Chelsea several times in the face
Milly kept the peace by staying in her place
We learned we needed two litter boxes that the both of them used
And absolutely under no circumstances use a litter-maid
It scared them so bad, oh the messes they made!
They learned to tolerate each other by sitting with me in my chair
One sat on the arm rest, the other in my lap
A picture was taken of the three of us taking a nap
Chelsea is now gone these many years
Milly is still with us, no longer afraid to speak her mind
Sometimes mouthy at inappropriate times
We are growing old together, at least I think we are
Milly may have plans to outlive us all
She might not cross over when God calls
She'll turn her head and blink her eyes
Get up and turn and walk the other way
Here's where she'll stay, OK? OK.
