Lifting My Spirits
When I was a child I played on the swings
And then I'd jump off and fly as if I had wings
I'd make forts and pools in the sand with friends
When the water leaked out we'd build them again
Climbing on mailboxes , dancing on porch railings
Staying quiet was never one of my failings
I used to have a piano I would play by the hour
The keyboards today don't have the same power
I would dance and sing and perform in recitals
Hearing the applause made me feel entitled
These days I'm finding new things that matter
I do things that won't make my hollow bones shatter
Praying a rosary before my feet hit the floor
And then I'd jump off and fly as if I had wings
I'd make forts and pools in the sand with friends
When the water leaked out we'd build them again
Climbing on mailboxes , dancing on porch railings
Staying quiet was never one of my failings
I used to have a piano I would play by the hour
The keyboards today don't have the same power
I would dance and sing and perform in recitals
Hearing the applause made me feel entitled
These days I'm finding new things that matter
I do things that won't make my hollow bones shatter
Praying a rosary before my feet hit the floor
Snuggling with my husband whom I adore
Going to breakfast with women from church
Sharing our lives as God's will we research
Writing and sharing prose and poetry
With friends sharing their stories along with me
Framing and hanging a painting after 25 years
Making an art station where needed things are near
Reading good books and sharing my personal views
With book club members who share their own reviews
With book club members who share their own reviews
I enjoy savoring a chocolate bar from time time
Dark chocolate or milk chocolate it's all so sublime
Eating lunch outside the snack bar on Sunset Beach
Feeling the wind off the waves, while seagulls screech
Calling old friends and catching up on their lives
Making plans to visit, setting a good time to arrive
Eating warm beef stew on cool Autumn days
Watching colorful leaves as they dance and play
Stepping out to dine with my loving husband
That's fun because he's my forever best friend
And one last thing that makes my spirit sing
With all the sweetness a closing can bring
Is knowing that when this poem comes to an end
It will be shared with all my family and friends.
