Nature's Light Show

When the sun melts away into into a technicolor array
And the street lights shine through the maple leaves in a shadowy glow
That's the time of day when out the door I go, staring wide eyed at the show

Awesome little jewels of light, nature's beauty of the night
There's wave upon wave of twinkling lights floating as if on the sea
Glittering and blinking through the yard and high up into the trees

Not only do they glide across my lawn as they fly
Sometimes they hover and dart and then fly apart
And circle my head too soon to depart

When I was young I had such fun
On hot summer nights I'd thrill at their sight
Catching them in my hand was my delight

The neighborhood kids came and joined the game
My friends and I would put them in a jar
Mother would free them but they wouldn't fly far

I did catch quite a few, it didn't matter how fast they flew
It was a joyous way to spend a hot sticky night
Catching and releasing these balls of light

Catching lightning bugs seems to be in my blood
I still today catch one or two
If you were me, I bet you would too!
