Me As A Housewife

Wake up with the sun and the wrens loudly singing
Say morning prayers, my peace of mind now bringing

Roll out of bed and put my feet in my slippers
Feed, water, and scoop our cat, her noise now zippered

Put breakfast dishes and food on the table
Pack my husband's lunch, then sit for a quit repast if able

Check for mail on the table by the front door
Go out, clip it to the mailbox then go in and do more

Clear breakfast dishes and put them in the sink
Clean up little cat messes before I have time to think

Get the laundry started and sweep the floor as needed
Think about what has to be done and what can wait or be deleted

In good weather take a shower, dress and go out for a short walk
It's healthy and mood elevating listening to the birds sing and squawk

Come home, do some reading and writing while eating a snack
Then choose a chore and finish it, try not to get sidetracked

Get phone calls and errands done while it's still morning
Check my calendar so life's events don't happen without warning

This isn't to say I never visit with friends and enjoy the day
In fact life has a habit of throwing challenges my way

Some days I try to take nature pictures but the birds fly away
I've tried to identify them but they get scared and won't stay
(Isn't that just the way? Oy Vey!)

But I digress because it's early afternoon and the have-to-dos are done
It's time for painting, drawing, or writing just for fun

This evening like this morning has the same several tasks
I don't intend to reiterate them even if you ask

So being a housewife is only one job that I now do
I've held many jobs in my past, not just a few

I'm retired now as far as Social Security is concerned
I write poetry and paint pictures and a few dollars are earned

Mostly I continue to make friends along the way
And that's the end of this poem, I've no more to say.
